The
Cripple of Inishmaan
By Martin McDonagh
Directed
by Kathy O'Grady
In
a small backwater town on the remote west coast, the residents
are all a-twitter that a Hollywood film company is on its way to shoot
a movie about the local inhabitants. Sound familiar? No, it's not here
and it's not us, but it very well could be. It's Inishmaan Island,
Ireland. The time is the 1930s and the cast of characters is as zanily
eccentric as only the Irish can be.
Playwright Martin McDonagh has written a play in the long, deep tradition
of Irish storytelling that fits neatly alongside those of such Irish
greats as Synge, Behan and (if you will) the earthy style of Frank
McCourt. This, his most recent play, is as
funny, quirky and idiosyncratic as any Irish play you've ever seen
or are likely to see. It is a theatrical palette of rich language,
ironic situations and colorful unforgettable characters. If you love
compelling stories well-told, you'll not want to miss seeing this latest
offering from the Mendocino Theatre Company.
Director Kathy O'Grady has assembled a stellar cast including favorites
Kennedy White, Ann Woodhead, young actors Quinn Fields, Bing York,
Lilly Deerwater and Jesse Beven (who plays the cripple, Billy), along
with newcomers Sean and MaryAnn Casey, to populate the town of Inishmaan,
rendered by set designer Nicole Allan (who most recently created the
scenery for Gloriana's INTO THE WOODS), with lighting designed by Tony
Tringale and costumed by Sally Tringale.
"McDonagh's…comic talent appears unlimited,
and he also has a way…of mixing up his humor with a touch of
the poet and a profound sense of tragedy always dangerously lurking
on comedy's untidy fringe." —The New York Post
